  • What is Green Deal?

    Green Deal helps customers make home improvements, like a new boiler or loft or solid wall insulation, that improve the energy efficiency of their homes without paying large upfront costs.

    It allows customers to effectively take out a loan to cover some or all of the costs of carrying out such improvements and to pay back the cost in instalments through their electricity bill.

  • Pay no more than you save

    The key benefit is that Green Deal customers will never pay more in their repayments than the expected savings on their gas and/or electric bill as a result of having the measures installed.
    That means you should be no worse off financially even after having all the energy efficiency improvement work done.

    How does Green Deal work in Wales?

    The scheme is very simple. There are four main stages of the Green Deal process:
    1. Green Deal Assessment: A Green Deal accredited assessor carries out an assessment of your home and prepares a detailed report which recommends energy efficiency measures you could install and the likely savings.
    2. Quotation: You may then contact a Green Deal Provider to discuss your report. They will issue you with a quote for the cost of the recommended measures and proposed monthly repayments.
    3. Installation: If you choose to go ahead with your Green Deal Plan, your provider will arrange for all work to be carried out by a Green Deal Installer. 
    4. Payment: Once the work is complete, your Green Deal repayments will be added to your electricity bill.

    And because the Green Deal is attached to the property, not the individual, if you were to move, the new owner would benefit from the improvements and would take on the repayments.

    Who can benefit from Green Deal?

    All householders can take part, not just SSE SWALEC customers. These could be private homes, social housing (council houses) or privately rented homes. Social and private housing tenants can take advantage of the Green Deal with their Landlord’s permission.

    Customers with the least energy efficient properties will probably benefit most from Green Deal. Some of the signs that your home is not as energy efficient as it could be are:

    • On cold days your property is lukewarm or cool even when your heating is on
    • You may feel (or know) your property doesn’t hold heat for any length of time
    • You may have an older gas boiler which, without you knowing, is costing you far more to run than a modern one
    • Draughts around the house
    • Certain rooms are far colder than others
    • Cold walls
