  • Supporting Welsh rugby

  • Tata Steel: SWALEC Leagues West 1 champions 2011/12.

  • SWALEC customers enjoyed a fantastic day of rugby at the Millennium Stadium!

SWALEC Cup winners 2011/12 Cross Keys RFC

Despite wintery conditions, over 15,000 people turned out to support community rugby in Wales at the SWALEC Finals Day at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on 7 May 2012.

The crowds were treated to a day of exceptional rugby and family entertainment and with the stadium roof closed the rain couldn’t dampen the bank holiday spirit.

In the first of the day’s matches Glyncoch beat New Tredegar in a tense SWALEC Bowl final, before Penallta claimed the SWALEC Plate over a determined Nant Conwy. Cross Keys were worthy winners of their first silverware in 127 years, as they beat Pontypridd 32-19 to secure the coveted SWALEC Cup.

"Every year we give tickets to our customers and this year we extended the giveaway into local communities. We’re thrilled with the success of the event and are already planning how to make next year’s SWALEC Finals Day even bigger and better." Jonny Petrie, SWALEC Head of Sponsorship.

Welsh Juniors score VIP rugby prize with SWALEC

Ryan Jones in front of the WRU National Centre of Excellence

Four junior rugby teams have been selected as winners of a once-in-a-lifetime training opportunity through the SWALEC Junior Stars competition.

A dream will come true for junior sides from Bangor RFC, Denbigh RFC, Bryngwyn School and Whitland RFC in spring 2012 when they join members of Warren Gatland’s Welsh international coaching staff, as well as a host of international players, at the WRU National Centre of Excellence for an exclusive training session.

The SWALEC Junior Stars competition was launched in November 2011 and invited nominations from Welsh junior rugby teams who have excelled both on and off the pitch.

Bangor RFC, Denbigh RFC, Bryngwyn School and Whitland RFC were announced as competition finalists in the U13 club, U14 club, U13-14 school and U13-14 girls categories and clinched their prizes by drumming up the most online votes from their peers and supporters.

The finalists were selected from over 35 applications by WRU Head of Rugby Performance and Development, Joe Lydon, SWALEC Head of Sponsorship, Jonny Petrie, and Ryan Jones, Wales international player and SWALEC’s brand ambassador.

Bangor RFC U13s scored 75% of the votes, Denbigh RFC U14s won with 46% and Bryngwyn School U14s by 80%, whereas Whitland RFC U13s girls team automatically qualified for a place in the prize day.

    Coaching masterclasses from Ryan Jones

In support of the Junior Stars competition, our very own rugby ambassador, Ryan Jones, filmed a series of master classes giving step-by-step tutorials on the basics of the game.

The British & Irish Lions, Wales and Ospreys star covered tackling, the line-out, basic passing and catching techniques, along with offloading in the tackle, and essential warm up drills.
