Gas leaks are very serious and can be life-threatening. We’ve put together some advice on what to do.
What should you do if you think you have a gas leak?
Open doors and windows.
Check if the pilot light has gone out. If any gas appliances have been left on, turn them off. If the pilot light is still on and your gas appliances are all off, there may be a gas escape.
Turn off the gas at the mains tap, which is usually near the meter.
Don’t turn light switches on or off, don’t use doorbells, mobile phones or any other electrical switches which could cause a spark.
Don’t smoke, light a match nor use any other naked flame.
Phone the National Gas Emergencies number immediately on 0800 111 999. Only use a mobile phone from outside the property.
If your mains tap is in an outside meter box, make sure you know where the key is. If you don’t already have a key, phone us on 0800 052 0567*.
