    The Power Behind Welsh Golf

The spotlight falls on Wales this Autumn with the 2010 Ryder Cup being staged at the Celtic Manor Resort.  In support of the Ryder Cup bid, SWALEC gave its support to the SWALEC Wales Challenge for a third year.

We’re also proud to support future stars of golf in the Wales junior inter-county championship, the SWALEC Junior Challenge and, at grassroots level, through our partnership with Golf Development Wales.

SWALEC also announced earlier this season its support of the Celtic Manor Wales Open as patron sponsors and as broadcast sponsors of S4C’s Golffio programme.

  • SWALEC Wales Challenge

Widely regarded as a valuable stepping stone onto The European Tour, the SWALEC Wales Challenge was one of 33 tournaments that take place across 24 countries and is part of the Challenge Tour that caters for aspiring, ambitious young golfers who seek to realise the dream of competing at an elite level.

The SWALEC Wales Challenge returned to the Vale Hotel, Golf and Spa Resort this summer (25– 28 August) with a line-up of professional golfers all hoping to launch a successful career.

After four days of exciting golf at the SWALEC Wales Challenge, Sweden’s Oscar Floren captured his maiden Challenge Tour title on a dramatic and demanding final day at the Vale Resort.

Due to poor weather conditions, the golfers took to the course for 36 holes and Floren, who began the first of two rounds with a four shot advantage, signed off with a round of 75 to finish on eight under par, just one shot clear of the fast-finishing Raymond Russell of Scotland.

    SWALEC Junior Challenge

We’re proud to support future stars of golf through our sponsorship of the Wales junior inter-county championship, the SWALEC Junior Challenge.

This Wales-wide competition for boys and girls under-18 is an annual celebration of up-and-coming talent and dedication. In 2009, Morriston Golf Club won the title and went on to represent Wales in the UK Junior Golf Finals held in Murcia, Spain in early 2010.

The 2010 SWALEC Junior Challenge will be held at Builth Wells Golf Club on Wednesday, 27 October.

    Golf Development Wales

At grassroots level, SWALEC has been working with Golf Development Wales on two new grassroots initiatives during 2010.

SWALEC has produced a ‘Welcome Booklet’ for players new to golf to help them get the most out of the game and enjoy the experience of starting a new sport.

During Spring and Summer 2010, a SWALEC sponsored ‘Beginners Start Golfing’ scheme was launched by Golf Development Wales in 25 golf clubs across Wales, providing taster sessions for anyone interested in taking up the game, particularly families.
