Homeowners in South Wales are being urged to have their home wiring checked to ensure it meets modern safety standards.
Electricians from SWALEC, one of the UK’s biggest energy companies, estimate that up to 40% of homes in the area could require electrical upgrade work.
SWALEC offers a free# no-obligation visual electrical wiring safety check for properties over 20 years old that have not been recently re-wired. The check is carried out by a fully trained technical advisor and takes approximately 45 minutes.
The advisor will check the fuse box and remove a number of light fittings, switches and sockets to check the age and condition of wiring. A checklist of any remedial work that is recommended based on their findings will be provided to the homeowner.
Barry Keep, regional operations manager at SWALEC said: “The way we use electricity has changed over the past couple of decades because we’re using more appliances and gadgets, such as multiple TVs in the home, computers, games consoles and mobile phones. So it’s important that our homes have the electrical systems to safely and effectively handle it.
“Older properties are more likely to require electrical upgrading, and we recommend a safety check for properties that are over 20 years old. It’s a quick and straightforward process, which can offer peace of mind by identifying any unsafe wiring or fittings.”
There are some simple signs that may indicate your home has outdated electrics, including:
Barry Keep added: “Outdated wiring and fuse boxes alone are not necessarily dangerous. However, modern wiring and fuse boxes are designed to safely manage the volume of electricity the average home needs, and to reduce the chance of overload and the risk of electric shock from appliances.
“It’s definitely worth taking the time to arrange a safety check to make sure your home electrics are as safe and effective as they can be.”
SWALEC's electrical installation business can carry out any electrical work from a heater or shower to a full re-wire. The company recommends that all electrical work is carried out by a fully trained and qualified individual. All of its electricians in England and Wales are accredited by Elecsa.
