SWALEC’s Junior stars shine at WRU Centre of Excellence

A dream came true recently for four junior rugby sides when they joined international players Dan Lydiate, Jamie Roberts, and Scott Andrew and coaches Rob Howley, Neil Jenkins and Wayne Proctor for an exclusive full-day training session at the WRU National Centre of Excellence.

Junior teams from Treherbert, Tondu, Beddau and Newcastle Emlyn got the opportunity to meet their rugby idols, learn from their experience and train in their footsteps after being selected as winners of the SWALEC Junior Stars competition.

Welsh international and Cardiff Blues player, Jamie Roberts commented, “The SWALEC Junior Stars is a great idea as it rewards young teams for their hard work. I’m delighted that I can use my experience to teach this group more about the game.

“I was a Blues academy member in my youth, and having a professional experience gave me an insight to what I was working towards. Today has been brilliant and I am happy I can give something back to the grassroots of the game.”

After a nation-wide search, the four lucky sides were selected as winners of the competition for their exceptional performances both on and off the rugby pitch. All four teams were put through their paces by the expert coaches to give them the experience of a professional training session.  It was followed by a question and answer session with the players and coaches.

Gareth Rees, a coach to the Newcastle Emlyn under 14s, nominated his team and attended the prize day: “The competition is an excellent initiative by SWALEC and supports grass roots rugby. My boys really had a good time. It was a great experience for them- they have never been so quiet and well behaved! I’d like to say thank you on behalf of Newcastle Emlyn RFC U/14's for the event.”
